چکیده

-Several lines of evidence suggest that the 13-year life cycle is genetically dominant over the 17-year life cycle in periodical cicadas. They are: (1) 13-year dominance best predicts the decline of 17 -year Brood X, and concomitant increase in Brood XIX in the midwest, following a hypothesized 1868 hybridization with 13-year Brood XIX through assimilation of heterozygotes into Brood XIX; (2) the pattern of 4-year off-schedule emergences of recessive segregates in Illinois following the proposed 1868 hybridization is consistent with a 13-year dominance model, but is inconsistent with a 17 -year dominance model; and (3) migration of a strongly selected and dominant 13-year allele best explains the synchronization and proximity of contrasting genotypes within the ranges of Broods XIX and XXIII in the mid west.

The Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution of Periodical Cicadas

Periodical cicada nymphs feed underground on root xylem fluids for precisely 13 or 17 years before emerging at any given locality synchronously and in tremendous numbers. Populations throughout the eastern United States are grouped into variously sized, geographically contiguous broods, which are reproductively isolated from each other. Six distinct species represent the 13and 17-year life cycl...

A Model Analyzing Life Cycle of Periodical Cicadas

This paper focuses on a mathematical model interpreting the prime number life cycle of periodical cicadas, Magicicada spp. . Changed the viewpoint to predators rather than the prey, this model fits reality very well by utilizing some principles and assumption. With the definition of the predator income, natural selection from predators seems to be the main reason for such a long life cycle.Consequ...

Permanence induced by life-cycle resonances: the periodical cicada problem.

Periodical cicadas are known for their unusually long life cycle for insects and their prime periodicity of either 13 or 17 years. One of the explanations for the prime periodicity is that the prime periods are selected to prevent cicadas from resonating with predators with submultiple periods. This paper considers this hypothesis by investigating a population model for periodical predator and ...

Life Cycle Replacement by Gene Introduction under an Allee Effect in Periodical Cicadas

Periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) in the USA are divided into three species groups (-decim, -cassini, -decula) of similar but distinct morphology and behavior. Each group contains at least one species with a 17-year life cycle and one with a 13-year cycle; each species is most closely related to one with the other cycle. One explanation for the apparent polyphyly of 13- and 17-year life cycl...

Agent Based Simulation in Biology: the Case of Periodical Insects as Natural Prime Numbers Generators

Magicicada is the genus of the 13 and 17 year periodical cicadas of eastern North America; these insects display a unique combination of long life cycles, periodicity, and mass emergences. Their nymphs live underground and stay immobile before constructing an exit tunnel in the spring of their 13th or 17th year, depending on the species. Once out, the adult insects live only for a few weeks wit...
